“I’ve been stress eating waaayyy too much, Paul. I know I shouldn’t, but I am so busy at work and the kids are home all day. My whole frickin day is like one endless Zoom call and my boss always wants to connect live at like 7 pm, after all his crap is done for the day. So, I get off that Zoom at like 7:30-7:45 and still have dozens of emails to get through, but I am wiped out and starving. So, I crack a beer and shovel chips down my gullet. I know, I know… I’ve gotta do better, need to figure out some sorta work-life balance,” reports my friend and online client, Dan.
Hmmm… work-life balance. Sounds nice doesn’t it??
Sure seems hard to come by. Harder to sustain. Quite elusive.
Could it be so because it doesn’t really exist? Personally, I think it’s a myth. There is no such thing.
Ultimately, what people mean when they speak of work-life balance, is that they want less of the former, work, and more of the latter, life.
In truth, what they really desire is more TIME – time to spend on what’s important to them – what matters.
The thing about time is… we have all of it that we will ever be given.
I’ve said this before…
Money comes and goes. Friends come and go. Time only goes.
Too often, we squander it by putting second things first. Remember the adage, put first things first?
One of the saddest things I have to contend with as a coach… watching genuinely good people consistently invest this perishable resource on things that dilute and distract from what matters most to them, from their essential.
Ultimately, we don’t need more time. We need to make better choices with the finite amount we have.
We have all of it we will ever be given. We’ve got to put first things first by investing that precious resource on what matters most, what’s truly essential.
Then, we MUST jealously guard that time like the precious treasure that it is.
Most of us have an intrinsic sense of what’s essential in our lives, but it may a sort of hazy notion.
Regular coaching calls are built into all of our Online Coaching packages. It’s during these calls when we help our clients, like Dan, identify what’s most essential to them and work on strategies to preserve and protect their time.
