Marty stopped in because he was worried about his balance. He’s in his late 60s and feels it starting to erode.

He was a little stubborn about not needing to do any strength training. He’s already quite fit from walking and didn’t want to become “muscle-bound”, whatever that means.

I did my best, but I don’t think I persuaded him of this simple truth… core strength and leg strength precede balance.

Without the former two, we’ll never develop the latter. They are the foundation. Working on balance without sufficient strength in our core and lower body is like buying nice curtains for a house that’s crumbling to the ground.

Marty is a walker. He covers eight miles every day and some days as much as 15. That’s a lot of walking! Most folks hit about 3-4 MPH at a brisk pace. You do the math. That’s hours and hours of walking.

I suggested that we reallocate some of those hours to activity that delivers a higher dividend in balance, like strength training. Unfortunately, he remained unconvinced and only looked at that as additive, something he didn’t really need and would have to add to his rambles.

We shook hands as friends and I offered my best wishes for his continued ambulation’s.

You’ll probably see Marty out on one of his many walks, that is until he falls and breaks something, because his balance ain’t so good and won’t improve without a solid foundation of core and leg strength.

If you’re over the age of 40 and not investing some of your time into those areas, you too might be headed for a tumble. Build the foundation first. And build it strong.

We prioritize core strength at MidStrong by incorporating it into everything we do and literally doing it first. And, to some extent, every day is leg day.

It’s on that rock-solid foundation that we help make MidStrongers’ lives awesome!

You can do this. Don’t settle. Join us.
