“Love the workouts, Paul! I feel fantastic, definitely, feel myself getting stronger. My pants fit better. But, I don’t get it, I actually gained a couple of pounds!? I’m working hard, doing everything you tell me to, but I’m not losing weight. I just don’t get it.”
This is a conversation we have frequently with new members.
Our weight is a composite of lean tissue, fat, and water. The number on the scale is a variable and unreliable measurement of progress. Frankly, I don’t think it matters much.
What does matter is our actual body composition – the proportions of lean muscle mass (LMM), fat, and water that comprise our weight.
I reassure these awesome people that all is well, to not lose faith, this is expected, all part of the plan. But that takes a leap of faith on their part to trust the process.
We each respond to exercise differently. Some burn fat rapidly. Others are hyper-responders to strength training and add lean muscle quickly. Some do both. For others, it requires a great deal of patience and trust to stick with their program because the needle doesn’t move much at first.
With the InBody scanner, we get an accurate assessment of our actual body composition, and with regular scans, we can assess true progress.
Have we gained 3 lbs of lean muscle and dropped 3% body fat? How much has our water weight changed?
That data is useful. The number on a scale… not so much.
Every participant in our June 6X30 Challenge will have “before and after” scans on the InBody.
The 6X30 Challenge encourages MidStrongers to commit to 6 days each week of at least 30 minutes of exercise or vigorous activity through the month of June.
Then, with the InBody scans, we intend to find out the impact that sort of consistency has on our body composition.
Won’t you consider joining us? The cost is a modest $75 and includes an awesome t-shirt that will definitely set you apart as a badass MidStrongers. Use this link to sign-up.
