It started chirping on an easy Sun walk with Jules. We ran a 5K the day before. My knee was a problem for the 3rd mile. Not so bad that I couldn’t finish. They’ve hurt for 30+ years, some days worse than others. But, that walk felt like a spike driven into my knee.

Even worse was that I did something that would take away one of life’s true pleasures – our hikes together.

I train with a single-minded purpose. Everything I do is meant to make life awesome, outside the gym. Training is a means to an end.

So the spike-through-my-knee pain got me pondering… what the heck am I doing this for? Why run?

Been a runner most of my life. All thru my 30’s and 40’s, I ran 3-4 days/wk. I LOVE gliding through the pre-dawn darkness, in all sorts of weather, alone with my thoughts, feet slapping a rhythm down the road. No matter how awful the run, the feeling when I finish is intoxicating. The mental clarity and peace of mind that a run produces are priceless.

Giving that up sucks.

Whoever said life was fair. We make choices. At this point in my life, most involve an either/or – either I continue running and tolerate debilitating knee pain, or I choose other methods that won’t inhibit my ability to do what I most love, hiking through a forest with my dream girl.

Others bear much heavier crosses. I am blessed and I know it.

When I catch myself lamenting what’s been lost, I’m reminded of one of my Mom’s wise sayings, “offer it up, Paulie, and be grateful for what you have.”

I can live with a bit of knee pain and be thankful for all I can still do. I can choose to enjoy and preserve every ounce possible.

That’s the answer to the question, “what the heck am I doing this for?” For enjoyment and preservation.

That’s why we’re building MidStrong. Because the enjoyment and preservation of life and all that makes it awesome are built upon our physical and mental well-being.
