It’s Therapeutic Thursday. On Thursdays my training focus is solely on recovery.

One critical element to maintaining a high level of motivation and energy is through programmed recovery. So I devote one day of each week exclusively to recovery. The “workout”, such as it is, usually involves myofascial release, therapeutic movement, stretching, and easy cardio.

Today, I used a foam roller and lacrosse ball to work on my mobility, particularly my sore shoulders. Then I stretched a bunch, focusing on areas that normally get less attention. Finally, I finished up with a 5 mile walk home.

It’s through recovery that we actually improve. The stresses of training induce physiological adaptations. But, it’s actually during our rest periods that these adaptations occur.

So, it is essential that we program rest and recovery into our training week. Thursdays seem to be the ideal day. The toll of the first three training days of each week is considerable. By Thursday my body is often feeling pretty beat up. Add to that the accumulating fatigue of the workweek, and it’s logically a good day to set aside for recovery.

You’ll find that you’ll actually get stronger, faster, by following a pattern of work then recovery, and being disciplined about giving your body a break.

I think you’ll also find that you will look forward to your recovery days and really enjoy them, knowing that you “earned” them through the hard effort you put out on all the other days.

Wishing you awesomeness as we close out the week! Hope you all have an restful and pleasant weekend!

Be strong, have fun!
