What Are the Qualities of Our Most Successful Members?
Out on a ruck recently, I was chewing on the qualities of our most successful members - what makes them tick, what attributes do they demonstrate regularly that sets them apart? Truth be told, I was brooding over a member who we had to drop because he continually struggled to make progress. I was searching for anything I could have done to help him more.
Without question, our most "successful" members owe that success to their consistency.
As you might expect, conversely, our members who struggle the most, struggle with consistency. But rather than dwell on the negative, let's explore what about them makes them consistent.
Before we dive into that, we should define "successful" Too often, in our industry, success is only defined by weight loss, as if the only point of exercise and eating well is to lose weight. But it's a secondary objective. Weight loss happens when we adopt health behaviors and make better choices about how we spend our time and fuel our bodies and brains.
"Success" by our definition is the achievement and sustainment of a level of health and function that makes every aspect of life better - filled with joy, hope, peace, and love. And resilience. When we are succeeding, we are incrementally and inexorably becoming the better version of ourselves that we all sense is possible. I like to believe that we are all works in progress.
Consistent people consistently make progress.
What is it that makes these fortunate few consistent?
Over the next few weeks, I'll share my thoughts and observations about the defining attributes these fortunate few all seem to possess and demonstrate.
Here's a sneak peek at the first of them... they are optimists. And optimism is a learned behavior. It's a choice.
I'll expand on that more next week. I'm optimistic that you'll find it fascinating! ;)
