We Leave Ourselves These

If we are honest with ourselves, when we examine the patterns of our life and see the consistent inconsistency of our efforts to develop to our full potential and become the amazing person we are meant to be, there is one overriding reason that we fall short…

We leave ourselves escape hatches.

They’re secret doors that take us to the dark tunnel that leads to the door hidden by vines at the base of the cliff.

I’m speaking metaphorically of course. But, we do this. When we finally screw up the courage to do something hard, something far outside our comfort zone, that tests our mettle and strains our willpower, we leave ourselves a way out. Just in case it gets too hard.

But, what if we didn’t? What if we truly COMMITTED and “burned the boats” so there was only one path to take… onward?

I’m a Tolkien fan. I’ve read the LOTR trilogy about 10 times. Of those amazing stories, the one that most resonates with me is the Battle of Helm’s Deep. Aragon and the entire surviving nation of Rohan retreat to their last bastion of hope, the fortress of Helm’s Deep. While its walls have never been breached, they also know that there’s no way out. By heading there, they decide that they will either fight it out to victory or die there. There’s no escape hatch.

I admit that’s a bit more dramatic than the circumstances of our everyday lives. Hopefully you’re not fighting for your life, surrounded by an army of savage orcs. But, it helps illustrate my point.

Whatever hard thing that we attempt, whether it’s losing 20 or 100 lbs, or moving on from a soul-sucking job to start the dream business that has filled our imagination for years, we will enjoy sustained success only when we fully and truthfully commit to it, regardless of how hard it will be to persist. When we allow ourselves an escape hatch we WILL use it. We have only to look at our past inconsistencies for proof.

I see MidStrong as kinda like Aragon. We’ll be there WITH you along the rough journey and we’ll be there FOR you when things get hard. Because, we want your life to be awesome and we don’t have an escape hatch.

You can do this. Don’t settle. Join us.

Stronger than our excuses.
