Why Diets Fail
How many people do you know have gone on a diet, any diet, and had spectacular success? How many have sustained that successful transformation and kept the weight off? Yeah, not many, right??
It’s an all too common experience. We diet for a time. Lose 20 lbs. Go off the diet. We gain 30 lbs. Discouraging.
Why is this more the norm than the exception?
Because, diets are something we DO, an action, a method we attempt, not something we BECOME. Unless we change our self-identity, who and what we believe ourselves to be, every diet will fail.
The thing about diets is that they work! Pick any of them – keto, Adkins, IF, Mediterranean, DASH, WW. They all work (at least in terms of weight/fat loss). But, only as long as you continue to stick with them.
Sadly, very few do, which leads to the discouraging yo-yo outcome I described earlier. It also leads to gazillions of dollars spent (squandered) each year.
It’s only when we adopt a new identity that we will enjoy a sustained transformation.
Want to get in shape and shed those stubborn lbs? Think of yourself as an athlete or a fit person, rather than someone who’s trying to exercise more and eat better.
Our behavior and choices will follow our identity.
Somebody who’s trying to get in shape may feel conflicted about the work obligations that are piling up that will lead them to blow off their workout. An athlete never misses a training session.
Someone on a diet may feel overwhelming temptation when confronted by the box of Dunkin in the breakroom. A fit person won’t be fazed by them and will enjoy their cottage cheese and berries (BTW, I hate cottage cheese).
We can apply this same concept to other areas of life too. Want to get better at playing guitar? Think of yourself as a guitarist rather than somebody trying to learn how to play.
Successful and sustained transformation is predicated on our self-identity.
Which is much of the premise of our Nutrition Coaching program. We don’t believe in diets. We believe in making the consistent daily choices that confirm the new identity we’ve adopted. There’s a button below that you can use to schedule time with us when you’re ready to adopt a new self-image and become the person you were meant to be.
You can do this. Don’t settle. Join us.
Stronger than our excuses.
